Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will retire, with the exception

The legendary goalkeeper who is also the captain of the Italian national team and Juventus club Gianluigi Buffon will retire at the end of this season unless his club wins the Champions League.

The 39-year-old still hopes to play in the World Cup next summer and will extend his career for the club’s world championship if Juventus win the European elite trophy, the Champions League.

The Italian Serie A club featured in two of the last three Champions League final, but always lost.

“This is my last season, and I’m pretty sure on the choices I made,” he said.

“One or two more years will not add or remove what I’ve accomplished.”

“The only (who will delay the intention of the retreat) is to win the Champions League if that happens, then to try to win the Inter-Club World Cup, maybe (Wojciech) Szczesny and I can play from one game to another.”

“But I think with a goalkeeper like him, it’s natural that next year I will be pulled over,” he told Sky Italia.

Buffon, who started his career in Parma before joining Juventus for € 35 million in 2001, was voted FIFA’s best goalkeeper of the year, announced Monday.

Buffon is Italy’s captain when he won the World Cup in 2006. He has also won eight Serie A titles, four Italian Cups and one UEFA Cup, but has never won the Champions League.

Italy are not sure to qualify for the World Cup in Russia next summer, as they still have to face Sweden in two November play-offs.
